Overweight

Does the Bible say that it is wrong to be overweight?

Anything we do that dishonors God is sin. Paul wrote, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (I Cor 10:31). In that same letter to the Corinthians, Paul reminded them that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, “therefore, glorify God in your bodies” (I Cor 6:19-20). Being overweight may be a sign that there is a problem with hormones, but far more often, it is a problem of the heart. Some of us are lazy and don’t burn enough calories. Others of us eat a lot with the unconscious desire to make ourselves unattractive to avoid getting close to people. We have been hurt before and we are afraid of being hurt again. Laziness and fear are spiritual problems and need the grace and strength of God. If you are overweight, talk to your youth pastor or his wife about what may be going on in your heart. If you can’t find the cause (like fear of being hurt again), talk to your doctor or a Christian counselor. Don’t let your weight be your lord. Deal with the root problem and experience freedom!
