Angels

The word “angel” means messenger. Angels are God’s messengers to us to guide and protect us. The writer to the Hebrews asked, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb 1:14)

Angels were created long before people came along. They existed to praise and honor God. The prophet Isaiah (Is 14:12f) records a time when the top angel, Lucifer, rebelled against God. In his rebellion, Lucifer became Satan and took one third of the angels with him. At that point, there were two opposing forces of angels: good ones committed to the purposes of God, and evil angels we call demons, who are committed to “killing, stealing, and destroying” the work of God.

We often see God’s angels in the Scriptures appearing to people (like Mary before Jesus was conceived or to John in his vision of the Revelation) to bring a message from God. Angels are incredibly powerful beings, not chubby little babies with wings and a bow and arrow. They deserve our respect and our thanks for all they do to aid us in our faith. We may not see them, but they are with us all day every day.
