Real World Parents

I am both a parent of an 8th grader and a youth minister.  I have a question for other parents. 

In today’s economy, should the church continue to place a high value on “excellent” programs and opportunities for families (like expensive youth camps) or would you value less expensive activities that might be considered sub-par when compared with previous years.

For example.  I am seriously considering renting school buses to take our kids to camp rather than touring busses so I can reduce the cost of camp.  Also, I may not bring in a band for a “camp concert.”

People get used to a level of comfort, but that doesn’t mean that actual ministry is enhanced by the comfort.  Some students are attracted to certain activities, but that doesn’t mean that doing other things will not appeal to others.

Across the board we are all learning what really makes a difference in the lives of students.  Money can’t buy it. There are resources available to do what we are called to do—I’m certain of that. 

Be one of the first to be daring enough to scale back BEFORE it is required.

     

Well…I am a parent of two high school students, so the cost is definitely hard to look at some times.  The big issue is that the youth minister needs to plan ahead!  Make sure that there are some money making opportunities so that the cost can be reduced.  Also, I think that going to the older adult classes and seeing what amount they might want to give to the students would be great, too.  I know that my Mom still buys notebook paper in August and she is 75!!  I think that if the whole church chips in to grow the youth that it will pay off by bringing the church together because everyone feels like they are a part of the effort.

     

I commend you on thinking ahead regarding how the economy will affect camp. A couple of options might also be asking for volunteers to drive kids to and from camp - obviously the number of students may not be feasible.

In regards to the band - you may find a popular “high school” band to do camp. They are cheaper.

     

No matter what the condition the economy is in, as a youth minister, I believe we must be good stewards of the funds graciously given to us. We have rented buses before, but only after considering other options such as parents driving or renting vans. Things to consider are the number of kids going, distance of travel, and need for additional travel at the destination, safety of the kids, number of parents approved for driving, cost of the rental, etc. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. If at all possible, parents driving allows interaction with their kids, other kids and you, in a different light than they normally see. It is the almost always is a positive experience and is the cheapest for the program.
But, if you’re traveling over a few hours, have the possibility of tired drivers at the end of a long day, want/need to the group together, then buses are a good option. If you have determined the bus is necessary, and school buses are available at a cheaper cost, then why not?
